First Catholic church to rise in Sagada

Sagada in the Mountain Province has its hanging coffins, the famous Sumaguing caves, and its own home-made yoghurt.

What it doesn’t have is its own Catholic church. But that will soon change with the construction of the first Catholic church in the mountain town this year.

Sagada has been predominantly Episcopalian-Anglican ever since missionaries were sent there in 1907.

“This explains why until now we still have no Catholic Church in the town proper for our Catholic tourist to visit or attend Masses,” Fr. Pablo Lumiwan, Sagada Mission Rector was quoted as saying in a post in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines website.

Catholics in the town have had to travel to Kilong village half an hour away to pray and hear mass. They will no longer have to go far once the church is built.

“The church will also provide a devotional destination for Catholic tourists who are looking for a church nearby where they can pray or celebrate the Eucharist,” the priest said. Aside from the church, the Vicariate of Bontoc-Lagawe will also build a shrine to “expand the Catholic presence in Sagada.”

The vicariate, which has jurisdiction over Sagada’s Catholics, actually broke ground for the church in 2009. They could not build it then because they lacked funds.

To help pay for construction of the church, there will be a fund-raising concert at the University of Santo Tomas on May 4.

Among the performers at the concert are the choir of Coro San Jacinto, the Cagayan State University Ensemble, and the UST Symphony Orchestra.

“The concert aims to raise the awareness and generosity of the faithful in supporting our Vicariate to achieve the dream of establishing our own church in such a beautiful town,” Lumiwan said. 🙄

3 Chinese get life terms over drugs

MANILA, Philippines—Three Chinese nationals arrested two years ago received life sentences for drugs, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said Friday.

PDEA director general, Undersecretary Jose Gutierrez Jr. said that suspects SunXiao Xu a.k.a William Chua, Wenxian Hong a.k.a Andy Hong, and XiuQin Shi known by her alias Kim Sy, were also each ordered to pay a P3-million fine after being found guilty of possessing seven kilograms of methamphetamine hydrochloride, or “shabu.”

In an 18-page decision, the court said it “believes that the prosecution has established its case against the accused with moral certainty, proven the existence of elements of the offenses charged and that the corpus delicti properly established and preserved.”

Guiterrez added that the two male convicts–Sunxiao and Wenxian—both received double life sentences, after they were also found guilty of selling almost 500 grams of shabu.

The three were arrested on April 18, 2010 in a buy-bust operation along Doña Soledad Avenue, Better Living, in Parañaque City.

“Another drug case was favorably resolved. The good collaboration among the different pillars of our justice system: law enforcement, investigation and prosecution, the courts, and the community, represents another victory in our unrelenting campaign against illegal drugs,” Gutierrez said.

SunXiao and Wenxian will be transferred to the New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa City, while XiuQin will be detained at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong City, he said. 🙄

Now it’s official: beauty is in the eye of the beer-holder

LYON, France—French scientists say they have confirmed the folklore that a glass in your hand will make you feel sexier, smarter and funnier, even when others privately think you are a turkey.

Psychologists led by Laurent Begue at the Pierre-Mendes France University in the southeastern city of Grenoble carried out an unusual experiment in a local bar and then in laboratory conditions.

In the first stage, 19 drinkers, two-thirds of them men, were asked to assess their attractiveness on a scale of one to seven.

Their alcohol levels were measured by a breathalyzer, and true to form, the higher the amount of booze that had been drunk, the rosier the self-assessment.

In the second phase, 94 men were invited to taste-test a new fruit cocktail on behalf of a research firm that was in fact a bogus company set up for the purposes of the experiment.

They were told that half of the volunteers would be given an alcoholic version of the cocktail and the others would be given a non-alcoholic version. No one knew which was which.

They were then asked to write and deliver a filmed message that was supposed to be used in advertisements for the new “brand.”

Each volunteer was asked to watch his film and rate his own performance for attractiveness, brightness, originality and humor.

Their alcohol concentrations were measured – the levels ranged from zero to twice the legal drink-driving limit.

But the data showed up a curiosity.

Those who believed they had drunk alcohol gave themselves high self-assessments, regardless of whether they had imbibed any booze or not.

And those who had believed they had not drunk any alcohol gave themselves a low assessment, even when there had been a hefty shot of pure alcohol in their drink.

“Our study shows that the mere fact of believing that you have drunk alcohol makes you feel more attractive,” Begue told AFP. “The alcohol dose has no effect in itself.”

The study, due to be published shortly in British Journal of Psychology, suggests the buzz is a placebo effect.

It contends there is a cultural phenomenon called “alcohol-related expectancy” by which one believes that a drink will boost one’s own attractiveness.

“The concept of alcohol is linked to social lubrification, to making you feel at ease with others,” said Begue.

The downside, of course, is that the sexy charmer that you confidently feel is not what others may see.

In Begue’s experiment, a panel of independent judges later watched the filmed presentations.

Many gave a low attractiveness rating to the men who, at the time, had believed themselves to be silver-tongued devils.

Previous research has established that other people become more attractive the more you drink – a tendency popularly known as “wearing beer goggles.”
